WizardsSpell Puts Word Skills in Real World Context

Partnership with Fairfax County helps students bridge the digital and literacy divide.

Herndon, VA, 11/30/07 - From better spelling to a broader vocabulary, teachers and parents can use new tools from WizardsSpell to see dramatic improvement in student word skills. Web-based WizardsSpell uses interactive sound, visual and tactile techniques to make spelling easy and fun for learning-disabled children and adults.

With the latest release, Propel Spell, WizardsSpell has expanded from a learn-to-spell tool to a literacy enhancer. A new library of sentences and definitions is available from a preliminary list of 5000 SAT words, and custom lists can be added in any subject area, such as math, science, history, or religion. There is no limit to the subject matter that can be chosen.

In Fairfax County, Virginia, students at the county's Computer Learning Centers Partnership have access to WizardsSpell to build spelling and subject matter mastery. The CLCP is providing technology instruction and project-based literacy activities to students who otherwise would not have access to technology.

"Our flexibility in list creation allows WizardsSpell to influence the building of vocabulary across curricula. While it is effective for all students, it is of exceptional utility to the learning-disabled and students with attention problems," said Melanie Gann, creative director at WizardsSpell.

Propel Spell promotes:

  • Bigger vocabulary, better comprehension. Students can choose to hear the word, the definition, or its use in a sentence. Teachers can create lists one time and share the lists among other teachers.
  • Simple preparation for college testing. SAT words and simple definitions are organized into short lists.
  • Fast navigation. Teachers quickly get to student profiles and find help in just one click, monitor individual and class assignments, and construct lists of any size.

"Our focus is to make technology easy and accessible, not just to students but also for teachers and parents," said Gann.

WizardsSpell is a product of WizardsWare, LLC. Formed in 2005, the company builds web-based learning products that make kids smarter and homework fun. WizardsSpell offers affordable subscriptions to schools, teachers, parents, therapists and students of all ages.
