1. Fine Tune Learning Cues
WizardsSpell provides Audio, Visual, and ALL CAPS learning aids. The default profile for students is: See the visual cue, hear the sound cue, and see and type in upper and lower case. Also by default, students can toggle these on and off during the practice session.
However, you may want to configure these in your student's profile. There can be many reasons for this. You may have a student that learns well visually, but is distracted by sound. Or vice-versa. These options allow you to set practice parameters to address the individual students needs and remain in effect over multiple sessions. When set in the student profile, the buttons will not
appear on the student practice page.
You can change the student profile at any time. Please note however, if the student profile settings are changed
during a practice session, it will be necessary for the student to log off and then back on for the
new settings to take effect.
Turning the settings off is done via the
control panel at the top of the "Current List" page. The control panel appears as follows:
The Student Control Panel
|
Visual Fade Control |
|
If the student profile is set to "Visual Fade Always On" or "Visual Fade Always Off" this option will not
show on the student page. If configured for "Visual Fade Always Off", the student will not be allowed to disable sound during the practice session.
|
|
Sound Control |
|
If the student profile is set to "Sound Always On" or "Sound Always Off" this option will not show on the student page.
This setting is ignored in test mode. Test mode simulates the teacher giving a verbal test, so sound is required.
When sound is turned on, the next feature, Sentences and Definitions can be used.
|
| Sentences and Definitions |
|
If sound is turned on, there are 3 choices of sound cues. Students can hear:
- The word
- The word and a sentence using the word
- The word and it's definition
If a sentence or definition sound file does not exist. The word is played.

ALL CAPS: |
|
Using all caps is useful for students who may not be familiar with the computer keyboard.
By setting all caps On, the student can visually match the letters on the keyboard with the letters of the word.

2. Maximum Word Count
Assigning the same list to multiple students and want some students to study more words than others?
Maximum word count is used more often by teachers than parents. Its purpose is to tailor the number of words
displayed to the individual students. For example, Sarah is a beginner and can do 10 words at a time.
Joey is an advanced speller and can do 30 words at a time. By using Max Word Count the same list can be assigned to a class, but the number of assigned words for each student can be different.
3. Progress Bar Settings
How long do I have to practice? You may want your child to practice a consistent amount of time each session. We provide 2 settings that allow you to control the length of the practice session. You update these settings in the student's user profile. The child sees a progress bar throughout the session and is informed when they are done.
|
Practice Time Limit: |
|
The number of minutes (up to 99) your child should practice.
We recommend a value of not more than 5-10 minutes.
|
| Correct Attempts: |
|
The number of correct attempts, on each word, to be achieved during
the practice session.
|
|
These settings can work independently or together.
If you specify both, whichever setting is reached first ends the practice session. For example, with settings of 10 minutes and 3 correct attempts, if the child completes the 3 attempts first, then the session will end sooner then 10 minutes.
The progress bar only updates when the child is actively practicing. The progress
bar will stay the same if the child does not continue to practice.
